The Story Behind

The Palm Beach is a project run by Frederikshavn Kommune, Park & Vejforsyningen.

The Idea (2004)
The idea for the Palm Beach was hatched in the early spring of 2004. On the 25th of June that summer, 30 palms provided a tropical atmosphere between the white sand dunes on the Palm Beach. Palms, exotic seaweed sunshades and a beach volley court characterized the Palm Beach all summer, which thousands of bathers from most of Europe benefited from.

A New Collection from Italy (2005)
The summer of 2005 featured 30 new and exotic palms from Italy, and the 60 palms provided shade and holiday feeling from June 6th to mid-September. The perky bathers could play beach volley on three brand-new courts between the sand dunes – and the not so perky guests could enjoy themselves in the beach bar.

Loungers (2006)
This summer, the Palm Beach features sunbathing on loungers and cooling shade underneath 70 palms.
The Palm Beach has set new standards for what is possible on Danish (Nordic) beaches, and Norwegians, Germans, Frenchmen, and Italians often visit the Palm Beach to check up on the new ideas.
Especially the Swedes have taken to the Palm Beach, which Stena Line (a Swedish ferry company) was fast to notice and use in their marketing towards the Swedes.

Another three beach volley courts are added behind the Palm Beach.

Lifeguard-tower on the Palm Beach (2007)
This year you can experience 90 palms – they were planted on May 21st. Furthermore the Palm Beach will have trained lifeguards for five weeks from July 9th to increase the safety on the Palm Beach. The arrangement is an experiment, so far , but hopefully the project can be spread to other beaches.
Vendsyssel Home Guard is providing the trained lifeguards and in return, the municipality of Frederikshavn will build a lifeguard-tower and take care of crew facilities during the summer.

The Home Guard wishes to be visible in a new and positive way and will based on this project assess whether the arrangement can be offered elsewhere.

This year, the Palm Beach also gets two new beach handball courts.
